The Johannesburg World Summit

on Sustainable Development

As the Johannesburg World Summit draws to a close, it is as well to remember that the first principle proclaimed in Rio in June 1992 was that “Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development”.

The WORLD UNION OF PROFESSIONS, a representative body accredited with the UNO and international institutions, recalls that all citizens, of all countries, must have access to professionals able to meet their needs in terms of health, advice and defence.

We are pleased that the concept of sustainable development advocated at Johannesburg is a process that reconciles ecology, the economy and social concerns by creating a virtuous circle running through all three poles.

We have noted that sustainable development relies on a new form of governance, in which mobilising and involving all social players in the decision-making processes must take precedence over merely exchanging information.

WUP is ready for such mobilisation and involvement.
